After entering the United States on a tourist visa, my authorized stay ends in about two weeks. An unexpected opportunity has come up to research my business idea and meet potential investors in person. Is there any lawful way to extend my stay briefly without violating my visa terms or harming future travel plans?

You may apply for a B-2 extension before your stay expires, but approval is discretionary and not guaranteed.

Any business-related activity must remain incidental and non-employment based, such as meetings or research. You must clearly show you still intend to return home and can support yourself financially.

Overstaying, even briefly, can negatively affect future visa applications. Changing status to another visa type is usually difficult on short notice. Consulting an immigration attorney quickly can help you assess whether an extension or alternative plan is realistic.
