After entering the United States as a student from Nigeria and completing my studies, I am now working with an international organization. I want to bring my parents to live with me temporarily or permanently. What visa options are available for parents of someone in my situation, and what requirements or timelines should I consider before filing a petition?

As a non-U.S. citizen, you cannot directly petition for your parents. Only U.S. citizens aged 21 or older can sponsor parents for green cards.

A visitor visa (B-2) may allow temporary visits, usually up to six months. They must demonstrate intent to return home after the visit.

Once you become a U.S. citizen, you can file Form I-130 for each parent. Approval timelines vary depending on processing and consulate procedures. Planning ahead and gathering required documents is essential for a smooth process.

As a student still on study visa, you can't sponsor your parents. The only option will be for them to come and visit you on visitor visa, or apply for another type of visa that will grant them stronger status
