After arriving from Azerbaijan a few months ago on a short-term business visa, I’ve started thinking seriously about building a more permanent life in the U.S. My initial plan was only to attend a series of conferences, but now I’ve made connections that could lead to a long-term job offer. With my current visa nearing its end, what steps should I take to legally transition to a work-based status without creating problems for future immigration opportunities?

You’ll need to find an employer willing to sponsor you for a work visa, such as an H-1B or another employment category. Your prospective employer must file a petition before you can apply for a status change. Acting before your current visa expires is essential.
