If I had minor traffic violations or past tax issues, will that prevent me from becoming a U.S. citizen?

Minor traffic infractions typically do not prevent naturalization, provided all fines were paid and there are no outstanding warrants. However, more serious offenses or unresolved legal matters can affect eligibility. USCIS evaluates good moral character during the statutory period, so honesty and full disclosure are essential. Tax compliance is also important, and unresolved tax debts should be addressed before filing.

Good moral character includes compliance with financial and legal obligations. If you owe taxes, setting up a payment plan and demonstrating responsible resolution can support your case. Failure to disclose past issues can be more damaging than the issue itself. Providing documentation that shows resolution and compliance strengthens your application.
