I moved to Maine from Russia earlier this year on a student visa (F-1) to attend a community college. I’m currently in my first semester, and everything has been going well academically. However, with the rising cost of rent and food, I’m struggling financially and wondering if there’s any way I can legally earn money while still on my F-1 visa. I’ve heard some students can work on campus or apply for off-campus jobs under certain conditions, but the rules seem strict. I want to stay within the law but also be able to support myself. What options do I have?

As an F-1 student, you are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the semester, and full-time during breaks. You don’t need USCIS approval for this, but you do need a job offer and permission from your school’s DSO.

Off-campus work is only allowed in limited situations, like severe economic hardship or through practical training (CPT or OPT). You must be enrolled for at least one academic year before applying for these options, and you’ll need DSO and USCIS approval.

Unauthorized work can put your visa status at risk, so avoid under-the-table jobs or gigs not connected to your school. Instead, speak with your DSO about campus openings or applying for hardship work permission if your financial situation worsens.
