Can an F‑1 student extend her I‑20 while an I‑485 is pending? The school is aware of the pending I‑485 and have no issue with it. In fact, they recommend submitting the extension right away, since USCIS may soon change the process and remove this authority from schools. But are there any consequences? In particular, the student needs to sign the new I‑20 attesting that she has non‑immigrant intentions. Can this put the Green Card application in danger? I’ve seen mixed opinions on this, so I’d appreciate updated perspectives in 2026.

Yes in practice, extending your I-20 while an I-485 is pending is generally permissible, and signing the standard non-immigrant intent language on the I-20 does not, by itself, jeopardize a properly filed adjustment application, provided the student continues to comply with F-1 requirements and is truthful in all immigration filings; the greater concern tends to arise with international travel on F-1 status after filing the I-485, not with the extension itself.
