I’m from Zimbabwe and currently in the U.S. on a visitor visa. I have about six weeks left before I’m supposed to return home, but I’ve recently discovered a promising market here for a product we make locally in Zimbabwe. I’m not planning to start a business right now, but I’d like to stay a few more months to research, make connections, and set up the groundwork. Is it possible to extend my stay legally for about four to five months without getting into trouble with immigration or affecting future visa applications?

Yes, you can apply for a visitor visa extension through USCIS before your authorized stay expires. You’ll need to file Form I-539 and show valid reasons for your request, like business research or planning. It’s important to prove that you can financially support yourself during the extension and that you still plan to return to Zimbabwe. Make sure to apply early, as processing times can take several weeks.

You’re allowed to apply for a B-2 visa extension if you file before your current stay ends. Include proof of funds and an explanation for why you need the extra time. As long as your purpose is legitimate and temporary, USCIS may approve it.

File Form I-539 before your visa expires and provide a strong reason for extending your stay.
